PHOENIX, Ariz. – UMKC men’s tennis (8-6, 2-1) cruised past Seattle U on Sunday to wrap up a winning Western Athletic Conference weekend at the GCU Tennis Center. The Roos won all six singles matches and also claimed the doubles point against the Redhawks.
“The guys had a great weekend and really fought hard,” head coach Kendell Hale said. “We struggled playing to our potential but pulled out some wins over very good teams. Our conference is very close in competition level, so you have to come to play in every single match. We are looking forward to the Seattle cluster.”
Airam Castellano (Gran Canaria, Spain) beat Arshak Ghazaryan in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 on the No. 1 court. Uldis Gaismins (Riga, Latvia) won 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 against Trenton Nield in No. 2 play. Amaury Navette (Paris, France) defeated Michael Schoettler 6-4, 6-7, 10-4 in No. 3 action. Tom Kruse (Flensburg, Germany) was victorious over John Stormans 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 4 matchup. Mike Psarros (Athens, Greece) won 6-1, 6-4 against Matt Alderson in No. 5 play. Vinh Pham (Lenexa, Kan.) rounded out the perfect singles performance with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory vs. Jeremiah Kalmus on the No. 6 court.
In doubles play, Castellano and Psarros won 6-1 over Ghazaryan in the No. 1 contest. Pham and Krus beat Nield and Adrian Sanabria 6-1 in the No. 3 matchup. Gaismins and Navette fell 6-4 to Schoettler and Stormans in the No. 2 match.
The Roos host Saint Louis in a doubleheader with the women’s program beginning at 2 p.m. CT on Thursday at the Plaza Tennis Center.
