RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The UMKC softball team (7-23) rallied late against UC Riverside (17-10) on the final day of the UC Riverside Classic, but came up short, falling to the Highlanders, 6-2.
Each side registered a hit in the first inning, before UC Riverside jumped on the board in a hurry in the second inning, scoring three runs on two hits and two errors.
The Roos would be held without a hit for the following two innings, and the Highlanders would score another run in the third, to hold the 4-0 lead over UMKC.
In the fifth inning, freshman Faith Willis (Kearney, Mo.) singled to center field, but was thrown out at second by a fielder’s choice, putting Maegan Rollow (Broken Arrow, Okla.) on first. In the following at-bat, catcher Kelsey Volle (Hartsburg, Mo.) was dealt a walk to put two Roos on base.
A pitching change by the Highlanders didn’t stop the Roos, as Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.) hit a two-out single to the pitcher, allowing Volle to touch home plate and cut into UC Riverside’s lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, UC Riverside would score twice off of a lead-off single and a home run to left field, giving the Highlanders the 6-2 cushion going into the top of the seventh.
Willis reached first base on an error to lead off the final inning for the Roos. A sac bunt by pinch hitter Abby Warkentine (Auburn, Kan.) placed Volle in scoring position. With two outs, Lombardini was walked and Leach singled up the middle to load the bases for UMKC. Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) reached first on a fielder’s choice to get Leach out at second base, giving UC Riverside the 6-2 victory.
The Roos will stop at Saint Mary’s for a doubleheader on Tuesday before opening conference play at CSU Bakersfield next weekend.
