RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The UMKC softball team (7-22) drove in four runs on six hits without any errors, but fell to the Pacific Tigers (16-17), 12-4, on the second day of the UC Riverside Classic.
Pacific added its first run of the game in the top of the first inning with a sac fly to right field. UMKC responded in the bottom-half of the inning, as Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.) doubled down the left-field line and Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.) singled to right field to put two Roos on base. Bri Sims (Rowlett, Texas) reached first base on an error by the second baseman, sending Leach home to knot the game at one-all.
Over the next two innings, the Tigers would add 11 runs to the board to take a commanding 12-1 lead going into the bottom of the third.
Freshman Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.) hit a lead-off single and Leach reached first base in the following at-bat on an error. Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) doubled down the left-field line, sending both Garcia and Leach home to cut into Pacific’s lead. Back-to-back ground outs by UMKC pushed Goodwin around the bases to make it a 12-4 game.
The Roos would be unable to score in the following two innings, falling to the Tigers in five innings.
The last time UMKC went an entire game without committing an error was against Drake on March 10.
UMKC will conclude play at the UC Riverside Classic on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT against the Highlanders.
