PHOENIX, Ariz. – UMKC men’s tennis (7-5, 1-0) defeated UT Rio Grande Valley (2-18, 0-1) Friday at the GCU Tennis Facility in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both squads. The Roos won three singles matches and claimed the doubles point to take the match.
Airam Castellano (Gran Canaria, Spain) earned a No. 1 singles victory over Koby Jansen, 7-6, 1-6, 6-4. Mike Psarros (Athens, Greece) beat Andres Hernandez in the No. 5 match, 6-1, 6-3. Vinh Pham (Lenexa, Kan.) won 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 contest against Mateo Schmit.
Uldis Gaismins (Riga, Latvia) fell 6-4, 7-5 to Yehonatan Kaufman in the No. 2 match. Amaury Navette (Paris, France) fell 6-4, 6-2 to Elliot Johnstone on the No. 3 court and Tom Kruse (Flensburg, Germany) dropped a close No. 4 match to Clement Sarradin, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.
In doubles play, Castellano and Psarros won 6-1 over Schmit and Kaufman on the No. 1 court. Navette and Gaismins beat Johnstone and Hernandez 6-4 in No. 2 action. Pham and Daniel Izadifar (Tonsberg, Norway) fell 6-3 to Jansen and Sarradin in the No. 3 contest.
The Roos face Grand Canyon at 5 p.m. CT Saturday and Seattle U at 2 p.m. Sunday to wrap up the conference weekend.
