LAWRENCE, Kan. – The UMKC softball team (5-16) snapped its 10-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over Drake (14-9) on the opening day of the Jayhawk Invitational at Arrocha Ballpark on Friday.

Each team’s lead-off batters were handed a walk, but a stolen base and a single by the Bulldogs put Drake ahead, 1-0, after one inning. In the second inning, both sides went down in order before UMKC’s Abbi Johnson (Midwest City, Okla.) led off the top of the third inning with a single to left field. With two outs, and Johnson on second, Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.) hit an RBI double against the right field wall to tie the game up at one-all.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Johnson doubled to center field with one out to start fifth-inning action for the Roos. An error by Drake’s second baseman put freshman Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.) on first as Johnson sprinted home to give UMKC the 2-1 lead over the Bulldogs.

In the top of the sixth inning Bri Sims (Rowlett, Texas) reached first on a fielder’s choice and freshman Alex Larson (Overland Park, Kan.) came in to pinch run for the sophomore. Making her way around the bases, Larson helped put UMKC ahead, 3-1.

Drake responded in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run to left field to cut into the Roos’ lead.

With two outs, and a full count, Leach hit a line-drive triple down the left field line but was thrown out at home to hold UMKC to just the one-run lead going into the bottom half of the seventh inning.

The Bulldogs threatened but pitcher Lynsey Conner (Peggs, Okla.) sealed the game, earning her second win of the season.

UMKC will be back in action against Iowa on Saturday morning, weather permitting, before closing the Jayhawk Invitational against Green Bay on Sunday morning.
