FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The UMKC softball team (4-16) was unable to find its rhythm against No. 24 Arkansas (19-1) at Bogle Park on Tuesday, falling 10-0 and 13-1 in its doubleheader with the Razorbacks.
Arkansas used back-to-back five-run innings to take an early 10-0 lead over UMKC in the first game of the twin bill. Freshman right-hander Alex Larson (Overland Park, Kan.) came to the mound for the Roos at the end of the second inning, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts in the final two innings.
Shortstop Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.) led-off the fourth inning with a single up the middle to prevent Arkansas’ starting pitcher from throwing the no-hitter.
The Razorbacks picked up right where they left off in the second game, scoring two runs in the first before adding seven more in the second inning. Four more in the run column gave Arkansas the 13-0 lead going into the fifth inning.
UMKC opened the top of the fifth inning with a walk handed to Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.). In the next at-bat, Ashlin O’Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) doubled down the right field line to advance Leach to third. The Razorbacks switched pitchers, but Dani Townley (Spring Hill, Kan.) singled to center field to help UMKC avoid its third-straight shutout.
The last time UMKC faced a ranked opponent was last season when the Roos played two games against No. 13 Oklahoma after a single game with No. 17 Minnesota.
UMKC will travel to the Jayhawk Invitational this weekend in Lawrence, Kan., for games against Drake, Iowa and Green Bay.
