COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – UMKC women’s tennis (5-6) won its second straight match in Colorado on Saturday with a 4-3 victory over Texas-San Antonio (5-6). The Roos won three singles matches and claimed the doubles point to earn the victory. Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) kept the match alive with a third-set victory and Katie Fries (Overland, Park.) sealed the win in straight sets.
“This was another big team win for us,” head coach Kendell Hale said. “Melinda had a big third set to keep us alive, Katie was the clincher and Yana played very well.”
Johnson won 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 over Denisa Ibrahimovic in No. 2 singles. Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) defeated Kylee Kato 6-2, 6-2 on the No. 5 court. Fries clinched the match by beating Charleen Tiwari 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 6 matchup.
Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) fell 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6 to Miriam Rosell in No. 1 singles play. Mariam Kurasbediani (Tbilsi, Georgia) dropped a 6-2, 2-6, 3-6 match to Laura Cabrera the No. 3 court. Marina Albert (Thebes, Egypt) was beaten 6-2, 6-3 by Lina Hallgren in the No. 4 contest.
Johnson and Grechkina defeated Rosell and Kato 7-6 (7-2) in the No. 1 doubles match. Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) and Kurasbediani beat Ibrahimovic and Sonya Madronal on the No. 2 court to earn the doubles point. Ladutska and Albert fell to Hallgren and Tiwari 6-4 in the No. 3 doubles match.
The Roos face host Air Force at 1:30 p.m. CT Sunday to close the weekend set.
