A sac bunt from Ashlin O’Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) advanced the runners, putting them in scoring position. Byrn doubled to center field to tie the game at two-all before Leach’s single gave UMKC the 3-2 lead at the end of the opening inning.
After two scoreless innings by both teams, SLU regained the lead with a single and a triple to give the visitors the 4-3 lead after four. In the fifth inning, the Billikens added two more runs on three hits. UMKC threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning, but SLU came away with the 6-4 victory in their first game of the tournament.
UMKC opened its second game of the day with a double to left field by Leach. SEMO responded with a hit in each of the first three innings before adding a run on the board in the fourth inning after a triple sent a Redhawk home.
