ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington Mavericks (8-6) muscled past the UMKC softball team (4-10) in five innings to take the final game of the UTA Invitational, 10-1.
The Roos threatened in the first inning as newcomer Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.), sophomore Bri Sims (Rowlett, Texas) and infielder Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.) all singled in the top of the first inning but were unable to make it home. In the bottom half of the inning, UT Arlington got on the board twice to take a 2-0 lead.
With two outs in the second inning, senior Abby Warkentine (Auburn, Kan.) stepped up to the plate for UMKC, singling to second base. In the Roos’ next at-bat, Garcia doubled down the left field line, sending Warkentine home to cut into the home team’s lead. The run by the Roos was the first earned run that Mavericks’ pitcher Sam Clakley had surrendered in 39.2 innings on the mound.
UT Arlington pulled away in the second inning, scoring six runs on six hits. The Mavericks would add one in the following two innings to take the game from UMKC.
Leading the Roos on the field was Garcia, who went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
UMKC returns home to host the We Back Pat Tournament on March 3-5 at Missouri 3&2 Complex. The Roos will compete against Missouri State, SEMO and St. Louis over the course of the three days.
