ARLINGTON, Texas – The UMKC softball team (4-9) was unable to overcome both Wichita State and UT Arlington on the second day of the UTA Invitational on Saturday.
In the Roos’ 6-3 loss to the Shockers, Wichita State got on the board in the top of the first inning on back-to-back doubles and a walk. In the bottom half of the inning, UMKC’s Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.) singled down the left field line and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Ashlin O’Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) singled but advanced to second base on a throwing error by the third baseman, allowing Garcia to score. Sophomore Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.) stepped up to the plate and doubled to left center field to send O’Brien home.
The Shockers added another run in the third inning to tie the game at two-all. In the bottom of the fourth, Byrn hit her third home run of the weekend in UMKC’s first at-bat of the inning to give the Roos the 3-2 lead.
Wichita would score once in the fifth inning and three times in the sixth to pull away and take the game, 6-3.
In UMKC’s second game of the day against tournament host UT Arlington, the Roos were held to just four hits including three from redshirt junior Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.), who went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate.
The Mavericks scored two early runs in the first inning and extended their lead in the third and sixth innings.
UMKC will wrap-up competition at the UTA Invitational against the Mavericks at 11 a.m. CT before returning home to host the We Back Pat Tournament next weekend at Missouri 3&2.
