KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s basketball team (8-18, 3-10 WAC) finished its three-game home stand with a 77-65 victory over the visiting Lopes on Saturday afternoon at Swinney Recreation Center.
“We are obviously ecstatic to get the win today,” commented head coach Marsha Frese. “It was the most complete win we have had this season with everyone being healthy. The team knows that it is all about getting healthy at the right time and we are very proud of them to continue to battle. I think today’s game gave them some confidence and this is the team that they knew they had in them.”
A jumper by senior Ceidra Coleman (Bryan, Texas) with 4:02 left in the opening quarter began the momentum for UMKC, who ended the first quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 19-10 lead after the first ten minutes.
In the second quarter, the Lopes outscored the Roos, 20-13, but a basket by Kristen Moore (Chicago, Ill.) helped UMKC hold on to a two-point lead going into the locker room.
Two seconds into the second half, Coleman got a steal on an inbounds pass and dumped in a fast-break layup to beginning another offensive push by the Roos. In the first three minutes of the third quarter, UMKC went on a 12-0 run that included buckets by India Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.), Samantha Waldron (Omaha, Neb.) and Lyndsay Leikem (Tucson, Ariz.), forcing Grand Canyon to call a timeout.
The Roos would finish the game on a 7-4 run after Johnson hit four-straight free throws, followed by a layup, and another pair of free throws from Kelsey Barrett (Kansas City, Mo.).
UMKC will conclude the regular season at Chicago State on March 4 at 2 p.m. CT.
