RIO VERDE, Ariz. – UMKC women’s golf started strong in the spring season as the Roos hold a 5-shot lead following the first round of the Rio Verde Intercollegiate on the White Wing Golf Course. UMKC shot 295 (+7) as a team. Chandler Gallagher (Kansas City, Mo.) leads individually after carding a 3-under par 69 in the opening round.
"We saw a lot of great things for our first tournament of the season," head coach Brianna Broderick said. "Chandler was on fire, playing well and having the patience to take it low. It was fun watching her play today, executing great shots and clenching some crucial putts.
"Our goal for the day was to keep things simple and have fun. There is still a lot of golf left and room for improvement, so we need to be patient and keep doing what we're doing. This team is learning to take advantage of opportunities, and we are beginning to see glimpses of that through their attitudes and play out on the course. Overall, I'm proud of this team's start and this team's future."
Gallagher finished with four birdies on the afternoon. Cynthia Diaz (Bucaramanga, Colombia) and Cyrielle Kern (Cuvry, France) are tied for eighth after shooting 74 (+2). Maria Henao (Pereira, Colombia) posted a 77 (+5) and Mackenzie Black (Independence, Iowa) shot 78 (+6).
The Roos lead a field of 19 teams. Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois are tied for second at 12-over par.
