CONWAY, S.C. – The UMKC softball team (3-6) finished strong on the final day of the Battle at the Beach Tournament, taking the 5-3 victory over Rider (0-5) on Sunday morning.
Freshman Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.) singled to right field to start the Roos’ momentum in the first inning. Garcia stole her fourth base of the season and Faith Willis (Kearney, Mo.) followed with a walk. A single by Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.) filled the bases for UMKC. Sophomore Bri Sims (Rowlett, Texas) grounded out for the Roos’ first out of the inning, but Garcia was able to score to give UMKC the 1-0 advantage after one.
The Roos extended their lead in the second inning, after Lia Lombardini (Chesterton, Ind.) drew a walk and Ashlin O’Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) homered for the first time this year. Rider answered in the bottom half of the inning, making it a 3-1 game after two.
The Broncs used a strong fourth inning to tie the game at three-all. UMKC answered in the fifth inning, as Leach drew a walk and Sims followed with a single to left field. Abby Warkentine (Auburn, Kan.) substituted into the game to pinch run for Sims. Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.) flied out to right field and the Broncs were able to get Leach out at third.
With two outs, Warkentine advanced to third on a passed ball by Rider’s catcher. Back-to-back walks put Maegan Rollow (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Lombardini on base and Warkentine came home for the Roos.
With runners on the corners in seventh inning, Alex Gale (Steeleville, Ill.) substituted into the game to pinch hit for Kelsey Volle (Hartsburg, Mo.). Gale hit the ball to center field, allowing Lombardini to score and give the Roos the 5-3 lead, and the game, over the Broncs.
UMKC will travel to the UTA Invitational in Arlington, Texas, next weekend, where the Roos will face Nicholls State, Wichita State and host UT Arlington.
