CONWAY, S.C. – The UMKC softball team (2-6) dominated Rider in an 8-0, five inning victory on day two of the Battle at the Beach before falling to Coastal Carolina, 7-0.

“We are very excited for Alex Larson and her first collegiate win,” commented head coach Meredith Smith Neal. “I believe we were able to execute well against Rider today.”

Freshman Alex Larson (Overland Park, Kan.) pitched all five innings for the Roos, giving up just three hits and one walk in UMKC’s win over Rider (0-4).

The Roos took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.) doubled to right center field, stole third and came home on a ground out by Faith Willis (Kearney, Mo.).

UMKC tacked on two more runs in the second inning on a double to left center field by Garcia to score Ashlin O’Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.).

The Roos added two more runs in the third inning to give UMKC a 5-0 lead going into the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fifth inning, O’Brien doubled to left center field to score Byrn and Maegan Rollow (Broken Arrow, Okla.) with only one out. Willis grounded out to the pitcher for the Roos’ final out of the inning, but O’Brien was able to score to end the game after five innings.

In UMKC’s second game of the day, and second game of the tournament, against host Coastal Carolina (6-3), the Chanticleers scored two early runs and extended its lead in the third inning by scoring three runs off of three hits.

Byrn led the way for UMKC in the Roos’ loss, going 1-for-2 at the plate with one walk. Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.) was also walked in her first at-bat for UMKC.

The Roos will conclude competition at the Battle at the Beach Tournament on Sunday morning with their second game against Rider at 9 A.M. CT.
