CONWAY, S.C. – Despite a comeback effort in both games on day one of the Battle of the Beach Tournament, the UMKC softball team suffered two setbacks against UNCG and tournament host Coastal Carolina.
“Our pitchers did a good job all day,” commented head coach Meredith Smith Neal. “We did not take advantage of key situations to score runners. We have to execute on the base paths and continue to get a little better every game.”
In UMKC’s first game of the tournament, Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) recorded the first hit in the top of the first inning while Maegan Rollow (Broken Arrow, Okla.) added a hit in the second inning.
UNCG scored first, taking a 4-0 lead with a three-run home run followed closely by a second home run in the third inning.
Goodwin blasted UMKC’s first home run of the season to lead off the sixth inning and put the Roos on the board. Rollow doubled to center field and Alex Gale (Steeleville, Ill.) walked on a 3-2 count to put two on base for the Roos. The Spartans put UMKC’s comeback to a halt, handing the Roos the 4-1 loss.
In UMKC’s extra-inning loss to Coastal Carolina, the Roos started the game with four hits in the top of the first inning as Abby Warkentine (Auburn, Kan.), Goodwin, Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.) and Bri Sims (Rowlett, Texas) each contributed a hit. Goodwin’s single to center field brought Warkentine home to get UMKC on the board early.
In the third inning, the Roos added to their lead after Leach scored on a single from Ashlin O’Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.).
Coastal Carolina answered in the fourth inning, knotting the game at two-all. Three scoreless innings followed and in the bottom of the eighth, a walk off home run sealed the game for the Chanticleers.
The Roos will continue competition at the Battle at the Beach Tournament on Saturday with a game against Rider at 11:30 A.M. CT and a re-match with Coastal Carolina at 2 P.M. CT.
