KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Two Roos finished in double-digit scoring as UMKC fell at home to UTRGV 63-52 on Saturday night at Swinney Rec.

The Vaqueros scored on their first trip down the court before Aries Washington (Kansas City, Mo.) tied the game on a jumper. The Roos followed that up with a pair of three’s from India Johnson (Overland, Park) and Samantha Waldron (Omaha, Neb.), and capped off an 8-0 run with a layup from Washington to go up 10-2 early in the first quarter. UTRGV rallied back with six-straight points, but Johnson knocked down another three to give the Roos a 13-8 lead midway through the quarter. Lyndsay Leikem (Tucson, Ariz.) reclaimed the lead for the Roos with a three in the final seconds of the quarter giving the Roos an 18-16 lead.

UTRGV opened the second quarter on a 15-4 run to jump out to a 31-22 lead. A jumper from Washington and a three from Waldron cut the Vaquero lead to four at 31-27 midway through the quarter. The teams would trade buckets over the remainder of the half and UTRGV held a 36-31 lead at halftime.

UTRGV used a 13-5 run in the third quarter to take a 51-36 lead with 2:34 remaining in the quarter. UMKC cut into the lead with three’s from Kelsey Barrett (Kansas City, Mo.) and Leikem, but UTRGV held a 54-42 lead at the end of the third quarter.

UMKC was able to cut the deficit to seven on two separate occasions in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell to UTRGV 63-52.

“I thought when we took an aggressive mindset, especially with our press, good things happened for us,” head coach Marsha Frese said. “We got some good looks at the basket and just didn’t make shots tonight. But when shots aren’t falling the rebounding becomes key, and credit UTRGV for being more relentless on the boards tonight.”

Kristen Moore (Chicago, Ill.) and Washington each recorded 11 points, with Washington hauling in nine rebounds and Moore finishing with seven.

UMKC will be back in action next week when they travel to Utah Valley on Feb. 9 and Seattle U on Feb. 11.
