David Heckler joined the UMKC tennis coaching staff in August of 2016. A native of Houston, Texas, Heckler competed for the ’Roos for four seasons, and graduated from UMKC in August of 2013 with a degree in business administration. In his time as a student-athlete, he helped the ’Roos win three Summit League championships and appear in three NCAA tournaments.
Under Heckler's leadership, the 2017 men’s and women’s team won the WAC tournament conference championships, which were the first ever tournament championships in the WAC and the first time the women’s team had won a conference championship in school history.
UMKC would prosper in Heckler's second year as the men's team clinched the 2018 Regular Season title and women's team would go on to advance to its second NCAA Tournament in back-to-back years. The Roos would fall to Oklahoma State once again in the opening round to a score of 4-1.
Heckler was a four-time Summit League All-Academic honoree, made the Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence, was on the UMKC Dean’s List, and earned the 2013 David B. Milner Award for Inspiration, which is presented annually to a UMKC student-athlete who, through the persistence and determination, is an inspiration to others.
After his career with UMKC, Heckler spent time as the Interim Head Tennis Professional for the Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona, and most recently as an Assistant Tennis Professional at the Juan Bracho Tennis Academy in Houston, Texas.
Heckler earned his Competitive and Professional Level Coaching certification through the International Coaches Institute.
