Kangaroos Open Up 2013 With Annual Alumni Match

(Kansas City, Mo.) – The Kansas City volleyball team will open up its 2013 season on Aug. 24 when returning alumni visit the Swinney Recreation Center for the annual alumni match at 5 p.m. 

Returning Alums
For the match, returning ‘Roos include: Kelly (Gettinger) Jordan (2006-2009), Mandy (Tipton) Lafferty (2004-05, 2007-08), Christiana McQuin (2008-11), Kara Thomas (2011), Liz (Pollock) Grisell (2005-08), Kylee Stephenson (2004-07), Nicole Kerkman (2008-11), Lindsey (Zerr) Hood (200-03), Dani Sperry (2005-08), Kristy (Waltemeyer) Kincaid (2002-05), Annie Gladbach (2011) and Elizabeth Beck (2008-11). 

The Venue
The home of UMKC Athletics, the Swinney Recreation Center houses the Kangaroo administration, coaches and student-athletes.  The competition court serves as the home venue for UMKC volleyball in the fall.

Last Season
Last season, the ‘Roos finished 17-13 overall, the second most wins in school history, and 9-7 in Summit League play, tying for third in the regular season standings.  After advancing to The Summit League Championship in just head coach Christi Posey’s second season, the ‘Roos fell in the semifinals to IUPUI. 

Winning Ways
Last season, the ‘Roos amassed 17 wins, the second most all-time, trailing only the 20 wins by the 1999 squad.

Hagedorn Named Preseason All-WAC
Kansas City volleyball sophomore middle hitter Emma Hagedorn was named to the Preseason All-WAC Team, after being named to The Summit League All-Freshman Team and Honorable Mention All-League squad.  On Oct. 22, meanwhile, Hagedorn was named The Summit League Defensive Player of the Week.  On the year, she started 27 matches, registering 235 kills with a .142 hitting percentage, 29 digs and a team-high 94 blocks. 

Joining The Record Book
Several ‘Roos placed their names inside the Kansas City record book last season, including sophomore Emma Hagedorn, who ranks third in a career and seventh in a single season with a hitting percentage of .264.  Taryn Miller, meanwhile, ranks second in career and fifth in single season digs per set (4.74) and fourth in single season digs (540).

All-Tourney Returners
Two members of the Kansas City volleyball team were named to all-tournament teams last season, led by sophomore Skyler Muff who garnered honors at both the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic and the Runnin’ Bulldog Classic.  Classmate Taryn Miller, meanwhile, was also named to the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic All-Tournament Team.

WAC Preseason Poll
The ‘Roos were picked to finish sixth in the nine team Western Athletic Conference.  The squad returns five starters and their libero from last season’s squad that finished 17-13 overall and 9-7 in league play, while advancing to the Summit League Championship in head coach Christi Posey’s second year at the helm.  New Mexico State received seven of the first-place votes with Idaho earning the other two.  The Aggies earned 62 total points, followed by Idaho with 58. Utah Valley was picked to finish third with 44 points, followed by Seattle U in fourth with 39 points, just ahead of Bakersfield in fifth with 38 and Kansas City in sixth with 35 points. Texas-Pan American, Grand Canyon and Chicago State rounded out the poll with 21, 17 and 10 points, respectively.

Staff Adjustments
During the offseason, the ‘Roos made several adjustments to their coaching staff, starting with Trent Jones who was promoted to Associate Head Coach.  Kalani Rose, meanwhile, joins the ‘Roos staff as the graduate assistant after playing four years at Park, while Amanda Guess will serves as the student coach. 

 ‘Roos In the Classroom
Not only do the ‘Roos excel on the court, but the squad thrives off the court as well, as the team was the recipient of the AVCA Team Academic Award for having a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher.

   Individually, Ella Meier, Brittany Fossier and current ‘Roo Sydney Crimmins were all named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence, while Crimmins, Meier, Fossier, Emily Lucas, Taryn Miller, Morgan Voorhes and Nicole Wemhoff were each named to the Summit League Fall Academic Honor Roll, with Crimmins, Lucas, Miller and Wemhoff recognized as Distinguished Scholars.
