Alan Mayer joined the Kansas City staff in August of 2013 as the goalkeepers coach. He has coached the goalkeepers for the Missouri Comets of the MISL, and was an assistant with the Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting Kansas City) of the MLS.

He played goalkeeper professionally for 16 years, and was a member of the U.S. National team in 1976 and 1977. He earned six caps with team U.S.A., including two shutouts.

He played in the NASL from 1974-81 for two different franchises where he earned several honors, including 1978 NASL American Player of the Year.

From 1979-89, he played indoor soccer in the MISL, where he helped the San Diego Sockers to the 1982-83 league title, and was named the MISL MVP and first-team All-Star goalkeeper.

Mayer signed with the Kansas City Comets for the 1985-86 season and became an MISL All-Star for the second time. "Kamikaze" (as he was nicknamed for his reckless all-out style of play) became a fan favorite throughout his time in K.C., spending his final four seasons as a Comet before retiring at the end of the 1988-89 season.

A native of Islip, New York, Mayer attended James Madison University (JMU) where he played collegiate soccer for four seasons from 1970-73. He was the JMU team MVP all four years while setting school records for career and season shutouts. He was selected to the James Madison University Hall of Fame in 1988.
