(Kansas City, Mo.) – The Kansas City men’s tennis squad found out at a watch party on Tuesday that it will be facing the No. 1 overall seed in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the UCLA Bruins. The match will take place on Friday, May 10 in Los Angeles, California.
UMKC (13-10) is playing in its third consecutive NCAA Tournament and sixth all-time. It earned the automatic berth after winning its fourth Summit League Tournament crown in the last five seasons. It is the fourth appearance under current head coach Kendell Hale in his six-years at the helm. Last season the ‘Roos fell to Oklahoma in the opening round, while dropping a contest to Texas in 2011. UMKC also fell to USC (1999), UCLA (2000) and Baylor (2009), going 0-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
The Bruins (24-1) are the Pac-12 champions after defeating USC 4-2 in the title match, and are making their 37th NCAA Tournament appearance, the most of any team in the field. They have a rich tennis history, with four national titles, the last of which came in 2005. They are 104-32 all-time in the tournament.
The competition will take place at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Other teams in the Los Angeles regional include Drake (24-3) and TCU (18-9).
Tickets for the NCAA Regionals can be purchased upon entrance to the Los Angeles Tennis Center (there are no advanced ticket sales). Prices are $7 for adults and $5 for youth/students.
