(Kansas City, Mo.)  -- The Kansas City men’s golf team will take part in its final tune-up of the 2013 spring season when it heads to Calhoun, La., for the ULM/Wallace Jones Invitational on Apr. 8-9.  The tournament will be on the Calvert Crossing Course at the Southern Pines Golf Club (6,845-yard; par 72).  Live stats will be available at

The Field

The 13-team field will include:  Houston Baptist, Jackson State, Kansas City, Missouri State, New Orleans, Nicholls State, Northeastern State, Oklahoma City, Omaha, Sam Houston State, Texas - Pan American, ULM and Western Kentucky, while Oklahoma State will send individuals.

The Course

The Calvert Course opened in 2001 and is a modern design.  It features Tiff Eagle greens and 419 Bermuda fairways.  The course features fast undulating greens, narrow tree-lined fairways and water on 10 holes.  Five sets of tees challenge players of all levels of ability.  The Crossings course is 6822 yards and a par 72.

Last Time Out

Antoine Rozner led the ‘Roos in the final round of the Bancorp South Intercollegiate at the Reunion Country Club in Madison, Miss., as the freshman shot a final round 71 to finish in a tie for 22nd at +5, while helping Kansas City to 12th spot as a team.

    The Paris, France native opened with a pair of bogies over the first seven holes, but rebounded to go bogey-free with three birdies over the final 11 holes.

    Junior Nathan Hughes carded the Kangaroos next lowest score in the event at +9 to tie for 34th, while junior Cole Chelle finished one shot back in a tie for 40th after a final round featuring three birdies.

Kuehn Named Summit League Golfer of the Week

Kansas City senior Korbin was named the Summit League Men’s Golfer of the Week for the sixth time in his career after leading the Kangaroos at the Memphis Intercollegiate.  The senior fired a 227 (79-75-73) at the 54-hole tournament to finish in a tie for 17th place. He led the team in scoring for the fourth time this season and registered a 75.67 stroke average. For the year, Kuehn is third in The Summit League with a 72.92 average.

Hughes Named Summit League Golfer of the Week

Junior Nathan Hughes recorded his first career Golfer of the Week honor after placing in a tie for 10th place at the WSU Snowman Getaway. The junior carded a 54-hole one-under par score of 215 (71-73-71) for a stroke average of 71.67 on the week. He helped Kansas City to a fourth-place team finish with an 868. The Kangaroos finished ahead of Air Force, Gonzaga, Minnesota and Kansas State at the event. Hughes earned his third top-10 individual finish of the season and ranks fourth in the league with a 72.78 average for the year.

Preseason Favorites

For the second-straight year, Kansas City has been selected as the men’s golf preseason favorite as voted on by the league’s nine head coaches. The Kangaroos recorded 60 points and seven first-place votes.

Kuehn Named Men’s Golfer of the Month

Kansas City men’s golfer Korbin Kuehn was named The Summit League Male Golfer of the Month after recording a league-leading 71.33 stroke average in three tournaments during the month of September. The senior fired a 54-hole 209 (68-70-71) to finish tied for fifth place and led the Kangaroos to a fourth place score of 854, the fourth-lowest in school history, at the Mark Simpson Invitational. Kuehn recorded his second top-10 finish of the month at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate with a score of 216 (70-73-73) placing in a tie for ninth. Kuehn also carded a 217 (71-71-75) at the Golfweek Program Challenge to start the season. Currently, Kuehn holds the fourth-lowest career scoring average in school history at 74.14.

Summit League Best

Entering the event, the Kansas City men’s golf team holds five of the top 16 spots in scoring average in The Summit League.  Freshman Antoine Rozner (73.11) and senior Korbin Kuehn (73.26) are third and fourth, respectively, while junior Nathan Hughes (73.89) is right behind in sixth.  Juniors Jack Fiscus (74.92) and Cole Chelle (75.52), meanwhile, are 11th and 16th, respectively.

Last Season

In 2011-12, the Kangaroo men’s golf team finished in seventh place in The Summit League Championships with an 881 with Korbin Kuehn (1st Team) and Cole Chelle (2nd Team) earning all-league honors.  As a team, the ‘Roos won two tournaments and shot the second lowest round in school history, the third lowest 36-hole tournament score and the third and 10th lowest 54-hole tournament scores.

Team Rankings

Kansas City enters the week ranked No. 110 in the NCAA according to Golfweek, while Golf Stat also ranks the ‘Roos 108 overall, both marks are tops in The Summit League.

Individual Rankings

Korbin Kuehn is 16th in the NCAA in putts on greens in regulation at 1.787, while Antoine Rozner is 28th in greens in regulation (71.1%) and Nathan Hughes is 49th in putts on greens in regulation (1.817).

‘Roos In the Classroom

Last season, seven ‘Roos were named to The Summit League Academic All-League team, Jack Fiscus, Jens Harr, Nathan Hughes, Trevor Johanson, Korbin Kuehn, Viktor Mikaelsson and Park Ulrich.  In order to be named to academic all-League team, each student-athlete must post a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the semester in which they compete.  Additionally, each was named a distinguished scholar for posting a GPA above 3.6.

    Meanwhile, Cole Chelle, Fiscus, Harr, Johanson, Kuehn, Mikaelsson, Will Robson and Ulrich  were named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence for posting a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. 

Head Coach J.W. VanDenBorn

Former UMKC men’s golf student-athlete J.W. VanDenBorn was named the Director of Golf at his alma mater in June 2007.  In this capacity, he oversees both the men’s and women’s golf programs for the Kangaroos.

    Overall, VanDenBorn has been the head coach for the men’s program for the past nine seasons.  In each of the past four seasons (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011), VanDenBorn guided the ‘Roos to at least a second place showing at The Summit League Championship with his 2011 squad winning the first tournament title in school history, leading to Summit League Coach of the Year honors.  He has led the ‘Roos to top-four finishes in the league championship tournament seven times.
