Men's Tennis Shows Well on Opening Day at SIUE Invitational

(Edwardsville, Ill.) - The Kansas City men's tennis team went 10-4 in singles matches and 2-2 in doubles action on Friday during day one of the SIUE Invitational. The tournament is a round-robin format, with each player facing all the others in his flight throughout the weekend.

"Today was a good start to our 2012-2013 season. There were some great efforts and I'm proud of the way our guys battled. We are looking forward to continuing things tomorrow as the tournament progresses." Assistant coach Cassidy Mears said.

In singles action, Grant Fleming posted a 2-0 mark in flight two, as did Tomas Patino in flight three and Tim Akhmedov in the fifth flight. Newcomers Jai Grewal and Andrey Smirnov both went 1-0 as well.

In doubles play, the duo of Fleming and Patino took their match in the top flight over a pair from Omaha 8-5, while Akhmedov and Smirnov won their match in the fourth flight by an 8-4 margin.
