(Kansas City, Mo.) - UMKC Athletics finished fifth place in the Summit League Commissioner's Cup standings on Tuesday, the highest finish for the Kangaroos since taking second in 1999-2000. UMKC also took third in the Dr. Helen Smiley Women's All-Sports standings, the highest finish since winning in 1998-99.
"This shows how much progress we have made, as well as the hard work and commitment by the administration, coaches, and student-athletes." Athletic Director Tim Hall said. "However there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to get where we want to be in the future."
UMKC tallied 78 points in the Commissioner's Cup, highlighted by top four finishes in men's and women's cross country, women's soccer, women's basketball, men's and women's tennis, women's golf, and softball. The 'Roos claimed their lone regular season title in men's tennis.
The Kangaroos scored 54 points in the Smiley Women's standings, while tallying 24 points in the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men's All-Sports Award standings to finish in ninth.
North Dakota State earned its first Summit League Commissioner's Cup with a total of 111.5 points. NDSU also claimed the top spot for the Smiley Women's All-Sports Award while Oral Roberts won the Steinbrecher Men's All-Sports Award.
The Commissioner's Cup is given annually to the member institution that collects the most combined points in relationship to placement in league-sponsored sports between its men's and women's athletic programs, while the All-Sports Awards are given to the institutions that accumulate the most points in men's sports and women's sports.
