(Kansas City, Mo.) - The No. 1 seeded UMKC men's tennis team (10-15) claimed its second straight Summit League Championship title and advanced to the 2012 NCAA Championships with a 4-0 win over No. 3 seed IUPUI (11-15) on Saturday afternoon at the Plaza Tennis Center.
The two squads opened the day with doubles action, where the Kangaroos claimed the point with a 2-0 victory. UMKC got on the board first when the No. 1 pairing of junior Grant Fleming and sophomore Cameron Schoenhofer took down Patrick O'Neill and Luke Bielawski, 8-5, while the No. 2 team of senior Gustavo Guerin and junior Abdulrahman Alawadhi wrapped up the point with an 8-4 win over Joel Modesitt and Nick Volz.
The 'Roos continued to build their lead in singles play when last year's Summit League Player of the Year, junior Nino Hasandedic, beat Bielawski, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 and Alawadhi was victorious over Modesitt, 7-5, 6-3, bringing the Kangaroos to within one point of The Summit League Crown.
The Kangaroos would then celebrate their second consecutive title when Schoenhofer beat Louis Sacks, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) at the No. 6 line to send UMKC back to the NCAA Championships for the fifth time in school history.
In the squad's other matches, Summit League Player of the Year, Fleming, was leading Mojsejev at No. 1, 7-5, 3-3 and Patino was up on Chase Emerson 7-6 (7-4), 2-0, while Guerin was trailing Shafer, 6-7 (5-7), 1-4 when the match was clinched.
The Blue & Gold will wait to hear from the NCAA on who their first round opponent will be in the 2012 NCAA Championships on May 11-13.
