(Overland Park, Kan.) - The No. 1 seeded UMKC men's tennis team (8-15) advanced to the championship match of the 2012 Summit League Championships with a 4-0 win over No. 4 South Dakota State (7-13) on Friday night at the Overland Park Racquet Club.
In doubles action, the 'Roos No. 3 pairing of sophomore Tomas Patino and freshman Conner Edwards gave the Kangaroos a quick 1-0 lead with an 8-1 win over Morgan Salo and Alejandro Marin. UMKC then claimed the doubles point when senior Gustavo Guerin and junior Abdulrahman Alawadhi defeated Dominic Rossetto and Justin Pyle 8-6 at the No. 2 line. Junior Grant Fleming and sophomore Cameron Schoenhofer, meanwhile, were leading their match at No. 1, 6-4 over James Thorp and Parker Lawley when the point was clinched.
In singles play, Fleming pushed the lead to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 over Pyle and Schoenhofer matched him with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Salo at No. 6 to bring the 'Roos to within one point of advancing to the championship match.
Guerin then clinched the match for UMKC and sent them to the championship match for the third straight year when he beat Marin, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5.
In the Kangaroos' other matches, Patino was leading Rossetto, 7-5, 1-0 at No. 2 and Alawadhi was up 6-3, 1-0 over No. 4 Thorp, while junior Nino Hasandedic was tied with Lawley at No. 3 at one set apiece, 3-6, 6-0 when the match ended.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when the take on No. 3 IUPUI for the 2012 Summit League Championship and a trip to the 2012 NCAA Championships.
