‘Roos Begin Five-Game Homestand With a Doubleheader Against Wichita State on Wednesday

(Kansas City, Mo.) - Wednesday, the UMKC softball team (11-11, 1-2 SL) will kick-off a five-game homestand beginning with Wichita State (6-19, 0-3 MVC) at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the Missouri 3&2 Field.

Later in the week, the Kangaroos will face conference foe IPFW (19-5, 5-1 SL) on Saturday (1 p.m. and 3 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.). 

THE OPPONENT

» Wichita State Shockers (6-19, 0-3 Missouri Valley Conference as of March 20)

Coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of Southern Illinois, Wichita State enters Wednesday on a 12-game losing streak. 

For the season, outfielder Sydney Stuever leads the Shockers in batting (.373), hits (25), slugging percentage (.522), and tied for the team lead in stolen bases (6) with infielder Sammie Shook.  Also, catcher/infielder Melanie Jaegers leads the team in RBI (12), while infielder/catcher Erin Carney is the team leader in homeruns (3)

On the mound, pitcher Sloan Anderson (3-12) holds a team-best 5.62 ERA along with 23 strikeouts in 16 appearances, while Katie Armagost (2-5) leads the squad in strikeouts (23) to go along with a 6.36 ERA in 15 appearances this season.   

At the helm, Kristi Bredbenner is in her first year at Wichita State after coming over from Emporia State (Kan.), where she was the winningest coach in team history with 326 wins for a .763 winning percentage. 

» The Series: UMKC is 6-31 all-time against the Shockers.  Last time out on March 10, 2010, the Kangaroos at home swept Wichita State in a two-game series, 2-1 and 4-0.   

USSARY AND RAMOS NAMED TO THE UK INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM; UMKC FINISHES THIRD

On Monday, senior infielder Megan Ussary and freshman pitcher Cinda Ramos (8-4) were named to the Kentucky Invitational All-Tournament Team for their performances over five games (March 16-18).

In the tournament, UMKC went 1-4 with losses to North Carolina State, UAB (twice), and Kentucky, but beat the Wolfpack the second time around, 3-2, in the consolation game to finish third.

Leading the way, Ussary batted .286 with four hits and one homerun along with two stolen bases.  In UMKC's second matchup against UAB on March 17, the Agency, Mo. native went 3-for-3 with a homer and one stolen base.

As for Ramos, she went 1-2 in three starts for a 2.58 ERA along with five strikeouts, while batting .333 with two hits and an RBI at the plate. 

In the win over NC State, the Olathe, Kan. native completed her sixth game of the year allowing two runs and striking out three, while going 2-for-3 from the plate with one RBI.

MOVING UP THE CAREER LIST

This past week, five Kangaroo student-athletes moved up the all-time UMKC career list in seven different categories.

Kelly Fischer moved into an eighth place for most played games (174) and is now fifth for most walks (43).

As for Kaelene Curry, she is now in ninth place for most games played (171) and moved into second for most hits (186).  

Also, Anna Sokolik moved into a tie with Lindsay Kendrick (2002-03) for the ninth most doubles (20) and holds the fifth slot for  most RBI (63), while Emily Ott moved into a three-way with Jennifer Heavner (1997-00) and Marci Wedel (1998-00) for the eighth most hits (123).

On the mound, Deanna Friese (3-7) is now third for most appearances (86) and innings pitched (465.2).

THROUGH 22 GAMES IN 2011...

The 'Roos were 3-3 in the Summit League and 13-9 overall coming off a 7-2 loss to IPFW in the last game of a three-game set on March 19.

Currently, the Blue & Gold are 11-11 (1-2 SL) through 22 games heading into a doubleheader against Wichita State.
