KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC Men’s Basketball will play more than half the 2018-19 season in the heart of the UMKC campus, in Swinney Recreation Center. All games after January 1, 2019 will be played on the Volker campus, according to the schedule released today by UMKC Athletics.
“We’ve put together a very competitive and challenging schedule,” head coach Kareem Richardson said. “Playing the highly important WAC schedule in the intimate setting of Swinney, within easy reach of our student fan base, gives us a decided home court advantage. We look forward to showcasing our talented squad and using the energy of the fans as our 6th man.”
The venue has been solidified as the home of UMKC Athletics and provides students, faculty, staff and the community with an intimate environment to enjoy the excitement of Division I college basketball.
One of The Roos’ most memorable and highest-attended games in recent years came when the team hosted Green Bay during the 2017 College Basketball Invitational postseason tournament in Swinney. This game was played in front of a spirited crowd in an atmosphere UMKC expects to replicate for home games this season.
“The guys are excited to play on campus in the gym where we practice every day,” junior Xavier Bishop expressed. “The atmosphere when we played here for the CBI was great and we are looking forward to playing in front of that same type of crowd this season.”
The move of men’s basketball to campus supports the initiatives of the new leadership across the UMKC campus. New chancellor C. Mauli Agrawal has injected the campus with energy, enthusiasm, pride and a new emphasis on traditions since his arrival on campus in June of this year.
“We want to create a culture of belonging here at UMKC – a sense of family or, as I like to call it, la familia,” said UMKC Chancellor C. Mauli Agrawal. “We should all be interconnected with one another, and bringing our men’s basketball games back to campus is one more way we can generate an engaging experience for our students and our whole university community.”
Swinney will offer courtside and end zone seating for all home contests. Season ticket holders in these locations, as well as donors in the courtside-reserved seats, will have access to pregame hospitality with hors d'oeuvres and bar service. Fans with access to this club have the ability to watch the game from this location.
A new benefit for season ticket holders will be valet parking. Fans will have the ability to pull up to within a few steps of the covered entrance of Swinney. This service will be complimentary for fans with courtside seats and available for a fee to all fans. Fans who purchase season-long parking passes will have reserved parking in the lot just to the east of the Atterbury Student Success Center.
“This is a huge step to foster and promote school spirit,” exclaimed Brandon Shuey, senior at UMKC and President of RooNation, UMKC’s new student spirit group. “To have games located on campus is an amazing opportunity and will allow the bulk of students a greater chance to attend games and participate.”
