Aaron Hanshaw took over as director of basketball operations prior to the 2016-17 season. He originally joined UMKC in the summer of 2015 as a graduate assistant coach.

Hanshaw spent four seasons at Friends University in two different stints after helping guide the Falcons to their deepest tournament run in school history. In 2013-14 the Falcons won the regular season title, set a school record for wins in a season with 27, and advanced to the Round of Eight in the NAIA National Tournament. Hanshaw also coached the program's junior varsity team that went 12-0 in KCAC play. In 2014-15 the team was KCAC Tournament champions as well.

Prior to returning to Friends, Hanshaw was an assistant coach at Lee's Summit (Mo.) North High School in 2012-13. While working with the Broncos, Hanshaw assisted with both the varsity and junior varsity teams. The varsity squad finished 15-9 with Hanshaw on the coaching staff.

In his first stint at Friends (2010-12), Hanshaw helped produced three first-team All-KCAC selections.

In 2009-10, Hanshaw was on the men's basketball staff at Wichita Heights High School where he assisted with opponent scouting, offseason programs and daily operations. While he was with Wichita Heights, the Falcons finished 23-2, won the 6A Kansas state championship and were nationally-ranked by numerous media outlets. While at Heights, Hanshaw worked with Division I athletes in McDonald's All-American Perry Ellis (Kansas, Dallas Mavericks), Evan Wessel (Wichita State) and Dreamius Smith (West Virginia football).

Hanshaw has been a regular on the basketball camp circuit, working as a coach at Davidson, Mizzou, Kansas State, Iowa, Lee's Summit North and Heart of America.

Hanshaw graduated magna cum laude from Wichita State in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in Communications.
