(Kansas City, Mo.)  - The UMKC men's tennis team (1-14) picked up its second win of the season with a 7-0 victory over Baker (6-6) at the Plaza Tennis Center after falling 5-2 earlier in the day to  Northwest Missouri State (14-3).

Sophomore Tomas Patino led the 'Roos on Thursday, finishing the day a perfect 4-0 mark, while junior Abdulrahman Alawadhi combined for three wins against the two regional foes.

In the opening match against Northwest Missouri State, Patino and freshman Conner Edwards gave the 'Roos an early 1-0 lead in doubles play with an 8-3 win over Luis Altimires and Jason Harris at No. 3, but the Bearcats would claim the doubles point as senior Grant Fleming and junior Tim Akhmedov fell to Mario Jakovljevic and Jose Ortega at No. 1, 8-5 and Alawadhi and sophomore Cameron Schoenhofer were defeated by Guilherme Narducci and Rafael Bugiga at No. 2, 8-6.

In singles action, Patino evened the match at one point apiece with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Bugiga at No. 2, but NWMS would claim the match with straight set victories at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5. 

From the No. 1 line, Fleming fell to Jakovljevic, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, while Schoenhofer lost to Altimires at No. 4, 6-4, 6-4 and Akhmedov went down to Harris at No. 5, 6-4, 6-4.

Alawadhi, meanwhile, picked up the 'Roos second singles win of the match with a 6-3 (7-1), 7-6 win over Narducci at No. 3, while junior David Heckler lost to Ortega, 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 10-5 at No. 6 to round out the lineup.

UMKC would fare much better in the second match of the day against Baker, as the 'Roos downed the Wildcats 7-0.

In doubles action, Fleming and Akhmedov teamed at No. 1 to beat Nick Baker and Zach Aldrich, 8-1, while Schoenhofer and Alawadhi took down John Qualls and Devin Glasgow at No. 2 by an identical margin.  At No. 3, Patino and Edwards completed the doubles sweep with an 8-0 win over Casey Gleue and Jordan Toothaker.

In singles play, freshman Jonathan Rodgers picked up his first win of the year in his first collegiate match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ryan Gleue and Alawadhi followed up with his third win of the day, downing Casey Gleue, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.

Sophomore Max Helgeson then registered his first win as a Kangaroo at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Aldrich, while Fleming dismissed Baker, 6-2, 6-0 for his team-leading seventh win of the season.

From the No. 4 line, Heckler notched his second win of the season with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Glasgow, while Patino closed out the day with his fourth win, defeating Qualls, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Friday when they host future Summit League foe Nebraska-Omaha at the Plaza Tennis Center beginning at 9 a.m.
