UMKC Falls 4-3 and 2-0 to IPFW in Saturday’s Doubleheader

(Kansas City, Mo.) - The UMKC softball team (11-13, 1-4 SL) dropped both games in Saturday's doubleheader to IPFW (22-6, 7-1 SL) at the Missouri 3&2 Field.

In game one, IPFW took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when pitcher/infielder Courtney Cronin RBI-doubled to left as infielder Ashleigh Bousquet and outfielder Larissa Franklin scored. 

In the bottom half of the first, same score, UMKC outfielder Emily Ott grounded out, but outfielder Anna Sokolik advanced to second as infielder Kelly Fischer scored from third to cut IPFW's lead to one.

To lead off the second, IPFW's catcher/infielder Dani Pugh homered off pitcher Cinda Ramos (8-5) to make it a 3-1 ball game.

In the bottom of the third with two on and one out, Ott drove in infielder Kaelene Curry from third, but Fischer was thrown out at home as she tried to score from second.

Next inning after infielder Alex Bousquet RBI-doubled to right-center to push IPFW's lead back to two, UMKC made it a 4-3 contest when Curry reached first on an infield single as infielder Marlee Maples scored from third.

In the fifth with one on and two outs, same score, UMKC had a chance to cut into the lead after infielder Chelsea Hartwig singled up the middle.  Next up, pitcher Miranda Kramer (5-1) struck out catcher Katie Henning to end the inning.

Down to its last chance after UMKC infielder Megan Ussary singled to left with two outs and nobody on, Hartwig struck out swinging to end the game.

On the mound, Ramos allowed four runs on 11 hits to go along with two strikeouts in six innings of work in her 11th start this season.  At the plate to lead UMKC, Ott went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a walk.  

In the second game, the Mastodons defeated UMKC, 2-0, behind a one-hit and six-strikeout performance by pitcher Megan Flenniken (6-3).  As for her counterpart, Deanna Friese (3-8), the Kennesaw, Ga. native allowed one earned run and seven hits while tallying eight strikeouts to complete her ninth game this season.

IPFW's first run came in the second when Cronin homered for a team-high fifth time this season. Then in the fourth, Cronin RBI-singled through the left side to bring in Franklin from second for the final run of the afternoon.    

The Blue & Gold will be in action tomorrow against IPFW at 12 p.m. to conclude the three-game series.
