KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (17-8, 8-3) picked up a 3-1 win over CSU Bakersfield (12-13, 5-7) on Thursday night in WAC action at the Swinney Recreation Center.

For the Roos, Melanie Brecka finished with 20 kills, hitting .386, with six digs and three blocks and Alicia Harrington added 17 kills, hitting .378, with 11 digs, two aces and four blocks.  Tyrecia Lukes, meanwhile, chipped in eight kills, while hitting .438 with five blocks.

The Roos opened the match in dominating fashion, taking the first set 25-15.  UMKC started hot, scoring eight of the first ten points and, after the Runners closed to 12-7, reeled off six straight to go ahead 18-7.  CSUB would get no closer than nine the rest of the way as the Roos built a 1-0 lead in the match.

In set two, the Runners hung close throughout as neither team was able to gain more than a two-point advantage until Harrington set off a 5-0 run with a pair of kills to give UMKC a 20-16 lead.  CSUB would close to within one twice at 23-22 and 24-23, but Harrington put the capper on the set with a kill to seal the 25-23 win and push the Roos to the brink of victory.

The Roadrunners then cut the lead in half with a 25-23 third set win, but the Roos again dominated in set four, winning 25-15.  In the set, UMKC jumped out to an 11-2 lead, capping the rally with a pair of Harrington kills and one from Lukes.  UMKC stretched its lead to 12 three times, lastly at 18-6.  CSUB would only get as close as six, and a block by Harrington and Lukes put the finishing touches on the match.

Alex Ratzlaff recorded a team-high 20 digs and six kills, while Rhegan Spiegel added 19 digs, seven assists and an ace.  Emma Dyer finished with seven blocks and four kills and Brooke Jacobs notched three kills and two digs.
