Roos Take Two On Opening Day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (2-0) picked up a pair of wins on the opening day of the 2018 season, taking down South Dakota State (0-2), 3-0 and Western Michigan (0-2), 3-1 on Friday at the Swinney Recreation Center.

Tyrecia Lukes paced the Roo offense on the day, hitting .684 with 13 kills against the Jackrabbits and .688 with 22 kills in the win over the Broncos.  Alicia Harrington added 10 kills and 12 digs against the Jacks for a double-double and seven kills and 12 digs in the night cap over the Broncs.

In the opener against SDSU, the Roos jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-19 first set victory, building the lead to a game-high six at 21-15, before Harrington capped it with a kill from setter Alli Schomers.

UMKC matched the first set with its second straight 25-19 victory with Lukes tallying back-to-back kills for the game’s final two points.

In the third set, UMKC jumped out to a 20-10 advantage after an ace from Rhegan Spiegel, but the Jacks battled back to tie the set at 22-22.  UMKC, though, scored three of the final four points on kills from Kynnedy Myers and Brooke Jacobs and an ace from Melanie Brecka, winning the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.

In the match with the Broncs, the Roos were tied a 22-22 late, but the final three points went to WMU as they gained a 1-0 lead with 25-22 win.

The Roos evened the match at one set apiece with a 25-14 win in set two with Emma Dyer putting the finishing touches on the dominating set with a kill.

UMKC then took its first lead of the match with a 25-20 win in set three.  The Roos used an early 5-0 run to take a 10-8 lead before Lukes ended the match with a kill.

In the final set, UMKC trailed late in the set 23-19.  UMKC, however, continued to fight, using a kill from Jacobs and an ace from Schomers to even the set at 23.  A kill from Lukes and an ace from Alex Ratzlaff then ended the set and the match, giving the Roos their second match of the day.

Against the Jacks, Ratzlaff finished with 10 of UMKC’s 48 digs, while against Western Michigan Spiegel finished with a team-high 16 digs.  Schomers, meanwhile, tallied 32 assists against WMU and Brecka notched 10 kills.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when they take on Austin Peay for the UMKC Invitational title at 1:30 p.m. CT at the Swinney Recreation Center.
