KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC sophomore Jayla Riggins (St. Louis, Mo.) has been named Western Athletic Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. This is the first career honor for Riggins and the first for the Roos this season.
“This is a good start for Jayla,” head coach Shameika McField shared. “She is dynamic and will do well this year in jumps. Jayla learns technique and executes properly.”
Riggins finished third in the long jump with a leap of 5.49 meters at the Bob Timmons Challenge to open the season. The St. Louis, Mo., native’s mark currently ranks first in the WAC and 49th in the nation. She also turned in a fourth-place performance in the triple jump with an opening round mark of 10.43 meters.
“Jayla had a great fall,” associate head coach Benaud Shirley said. “The results from last weekend were an indicator of the hard work she has put in.”
Senior standout Bryce Miller (Ashland, Wis.) will kick off his season at the Hoosier Open in Bloomington, Ind., and represent the Roos on Dec. 8 to close out 2017 for UMKC.
