ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Three first-half goals pushed the UMKC men’s soccer team past Saint Louis, 3-0, at Hermann Stadium on Saturday evening in its first exhibition match of the 2017 season. Forward Eric McWoods (St. Louis, Mo.) netted two goals for the Roos within eight minutes for the senior’s homecoming.
“It was a great way to start the preseason,” commented head coach Rick Benben. “We played well against a good team with contributions from the entire group.”
At the 5:20 mark of the match, Diego Serfaty (Caracas, Venezuela) took UMKC’s first shot attempt, hitting the post. In the seventh minute, McWoods connected with Pandelis Popgeorgiev (Budapest, Hungary), who bombed the ball past SLU’s keeper to put the Roos out ahead.
Back-to-back shots by Alvaro Hernando (Bilbao, Spain) would keep UMKC’s offensive momentum going. In the 18th minute of the match, McWoods converted a penalty kick to give the Roos a 2-0 lead over the Billikens.
McWoods continued to be a threat on the pitch, punching in UMKC’s third goal of the night off a long cross from teammate Sean Bernabo (Eden Prairie, Minn.) in the 26th mintute, giving the Roos a three-goal cushion over SLU.
Goalkeepers Filippo Errico (Verona, Italy) and Ryan Tome (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) each played a half for UMKC. The Billikens played more aggressive in the second half, taking 11 shots at Tome and the Roos after tallying just two shots in the first half. The junior keeper, who missed the entire 2016 season due to an injury, collected three saves to give UMKC the shutout victory.
UMKC will host neighboring Rockhurst for its final exhibition tune-up on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 5 p.m. CT, before kicking off the regular season at Central Arkansas on Aug. 25.
