MERRIAM, Kan. – UMKC women’s tennis (2-5) dominated William Jewell (0-5) 7-0 Wednesday afternoon at the Kansas City Racquet Club. The Roos won all six singles matches and claimed the doubles point.
“It was a total team effort,” head coach Kendell Hale said. “We’ve played a really tough schedule so it’s nice to see the ladies rewarded for their hard work.’
In singles play, Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) defeated Lauren Huddleston in No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-0. Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) bested Becca Richison on the No. 2 court 6-1, 6-1. Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) won in No. 3 play over Claire Mackay by the same score. Mariam Kurasbediani (Tbilsi, Georgia) was victorious 6-0, 6-1 against Whitney Holloman in the No. 4 match. Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) beat Hannah Waine 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 5 contest and Raquel Argenal (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) returned to win 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 match.
On the doubles court, Johnson and Grechkina took down Huddleston and Richison 6-1 in the No. 1 matchup. Ladutska and Kurasbediani beat Mackay and Waine by the same score in No. 2 play while Vale and Argenal beat Holloman and Caroline Lane 6-4 in the No. 3 match.
For Argenal, it marked the senior’s final match competing for the Roos as she is set to have season-ending surgery.
UMKC will travel to Oklahoma for a 3:30 p.m. CT match on Sunday at the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion.
