(Kansas City, Mo.) – Katie Kelley continued her effectiveness for the second consecutive day, tossing a complete game and striking out seven batters to lead Kansas City to a series-clinching victory over the visiting Wolverines of Utah Valley on Saturday.
The Kangaroos (16-32, 5-7 WAC) struck first with two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Cinda Ramos reached with a one-out infield single and Kelley followed with base hit of her own into right-centerfield, moving Ramos to third base before Caitlin Christopher plated Ramos with a sacrifice fly to deep right field for the first run of the game. Alexandra Friloux kept things moving with a four-pitch walk, and Marlee Maples drove in Kelley – scoring from second base – with a single up the middle.
UVU (13-31, 5-7 WAC) responded with a run in the top of the second to cut the margin in half, but the ‘Roos answered in the bottom of the fifth inning after Brooke Parker led off the frame with a single. Parker moved to second base on a ground out, and to third base on a wild pitch, before Kelley added an insurance run with a single through the left side.
In the top of the seventh, Wolverine outfielder Megan Meay provided some degree of drama with a solo shot to centerfield, cutting the advantage to one run. Kelley slammed the door there after, however, handing UMKC its fifth conference victory of the season.
The sophomore from Coweta, Okla. continued her hot hitting, as well, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a RBI. Maples added two hits, a stolen base, and, along with Christopher, drove in a run.
Kansas City will return to action next weekend, welcoming Bakersfield to Missouri 3&2 Complex for its final WAC regular season series of the season.
