“We are ecstatic to play our first season in the WAC Conference,” Frese said. “As a coach, change is constant, so we look forward to the new challenges that await us with the move to the WAC. It is always exciting to be a part of a different style of play and it is one that I know the fans will be excited to watch and experience first-hand.”
The conference slate will be a 16-game, home-and-home, round robin format between the nine members of the WAC, including first-year members Chicago State, Bakersfield, Grand Canyon, Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley, as well as holdovers New Mexico State, Idaho and Seattle. Grand Canyon will be ineligible for the postseason until 2017 during their NCAA Division I transition period.
The ‘Roos open up WAC play with a three game homestand starting with the Vandals on Jan. 2, Seattle on Jan. 4 and Chicago State on Jan. 11, followed by a trip south to Texas-Pan American on Jan. 16 and New Mexico State on Jan. 18.
Following a pair of home contests with Utah Valley on Jan. 23 and Bakersfield on Jan. 25, the ‘Roos will reach the midway point of their conference slate when they head to Phoenix, Ariz., to take on Grand Canyon, followed by a trip to Chicago State on Feb. 8.
Kansas City then gets visits from New Mexico State on Feb. 13 and Texas-Pan American on Feb. 15, before the penultimate road trip of the season to Bakersfield on Feb. 20 and Utah Valley on Feb. 22.
The final home game of the season features Grand Canyon’s first trip to Kansas City on Feb. 27, while the ‘Roos close out the regular season at Seattle on Mar. 6 and at Idaho on Mar. 8.
The 2014 WAC Women’s Basketball Championship will be held at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on Mar. 12, 14-15, with all eight eligible teams making the event.
“Our goals for year two were evident the very first day of post-season workouts; to establish and build a championship culture,” Frese said. “Last year left a bad taste in their mouths and our team worked really hard in both the spring and the summer to practice and play at a championship pace. There was a recommitment to not only their individual skill sets but also to the team as a whole.”
