(Kansas City, Mo.) – UMKC men’s basketball added Juan Ramon Rivas to its 2013 class on Friday, becoming the fifth to commit to be a Kangaroo. A 6-8 forward, he played at Olympia High School in Orlando, Florida.
“Ramon is a great fit for our program both in terms of character and basketball abilities,” UMKC Head Coach Kareem Richardson said of his fifth signee, “He has tremendous versatility, which will fit our style of play.”

Averaged 17 points and nine rebounds per game as a senior at Olympia High School for coach Mark Griseck… He was a member of the all-district squad and was named team MVP, while also serving as team captain his senior year… He helped the squad to 23 wins as a junior as well… He played AAU ball for the D12 Warriors and coach Carlos Morales… The team took third at AAU nationals and had all 12 players go to Division I schools… His father, Ramon, played at Temple, and two seasons for the Boston Celtics in 1988-89… He also played professionally in Europe for 15 years and is currently a Spanish broadcaster for the Orlando Magic.
Rivas joins Martez Harrison (Brewster Academy/University Academy), Isaac Kreuer (Impact Basketball Academy/Metro Academy), Frank Williams, Jr. (Indian Hills C.C./Raytown H.S.) and Shayok Shayok (Bradley/Ottawa, Ontario) as part of Richardson’s first signing class.
