KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 5 seed UMKC softball team (27-27) used a five-run seventh inning rally to pick up a late come-from-behind 5-4 victory over No. 4 seed Utah Valley (15-30) on Wednesday afternoon at the GCU Softball Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Roos were held without a baserunner until one out in the fourth and without a hit until Alexis D’Ambrosio led-off the fifth with an infield single.
The Wolverines, meanwhile, plated three runs across the first six innings of play, taking a 3-0 lead into the final stanza.
After a flyout to center, the Roos were down to their final out, when Catherine Friloux singled to left, scoring Willis and Shaw and cutting the lead to one.
D.J. Cannon followed by reaching on the Wolverines’ second error of the inning and, after Sydney Garcia was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Chyanne Onstad doubled to right to clear the bases and put the Roos on top 5-3 heading to the last of the seventh.
UVU managed to bring the lead to one in the inning with an unearned run, but Kailyn Packard would finish off her complete game to pick up the win for Kansas City.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow in the tournament as they now advance to take on No. 1 seed Seattle U at 12:30 p.m. CT.
