KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (28-13, 4-6) picked up a WAC victory on Friday in the opener of a three-game series with CSU Bakersfield (13-20, 2-5), 5-2 at RR Softball Complex in Bakersfield, Calif.

On the mound, Mia Hoveland (10-6) picked up the victory after tossing a complete game with five strikeouts.

Bre Hunter led the Roos at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Sydney Garcia finished with a hit and an RBI and Faith Willis notched a hit and two RBIs.

UMKC got the scoring started in the first when Hunter’s single up the middle knocked in Madason Shaw, but the Runners quickly evened the score with a run in the bottom of the inning.

The Roos went back in front when Willis’ two-run doubled plated Hunter and Chyanne Onstad and pushed the lead to two.  CSUB would again answer but this time only trimmed the lead to one.

Kansas City, though, would put the game away in the fourth after Garcia scored D.J. Cannon with a double to right center and Alexis D’Ambrosio drove in Catherine Friloux.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action on Saturday with the final two games of the series against the Roadrunners starting at 3 p.m. CT.
