KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (23-16, 3-6) picked up a pair of shutout victories on Saturday afternoon over California Baptist (16-23, 3-6), downing the Lancers 4-0 and 2-0 at Urban Youth Academy.

On the mound, Kailyn Packard tossed 7.0 innings, allowing just six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts for her seventh win of the season, while Mia Hoveland went 7.0 innings, allowing just four hits with three strikeouts.

In game one, Bre Hunter put the Roos ahead early, belting a two-run homerun, scoring Madason Shaw who had doubled early in the frame, in the bottom of the first.

Three innings later, the Roos pushed the lead to 4-0 when Ashley Thorne scored on a CBU error after a double steal and Willis scored on another double steal as she stole home.

The four runs were more than enough for Packard as the freshman held the Lancers at bay for the 4-0 victory.

In game two, UMKC again scored early, this time getting a two-run single from Catherine Friloux that knocked in Maegan Rollow and Willis to give the Roos a two-run edge in the second.

Hoveland, meanwhile, would make the two runs stand up as she matched Packard by keeping CBU off the scoreboard for the 2-0 win.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Tuesday when they head across the state to St. Louis to take on Saint Louis at 4 p.m. CT.
