KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (18-12, 1-2) closed out the opening Western Athletic Conference series against Seattle U (20-13, 2-1) on Saturday with a 7-5 victory at Urban Youth Academy.
Overall five Roos recorded multiple hits, led my Madason Shaw’s three knocks, with the Roos notching 13 hits overall.
Seattle U opened the game with a pair of runs in the first and kept the Roos off the scoreboard in each of the first two innings.
In the third, however the Roos busted the game open, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring six runs, all with two outs.
After the first two Roos were retired, Chyanne Onstad and Shaw singled back-to-back and Bre Hunter’s double knocked in both. Faith Willis then doubled in Hunter and Maegan Rollow, who had walked earlier in the inning, while starting pitcher Mia Hoveland helped herself with a single to right that plated Willis. Pinch runner Macy Hornosky then scored the final run on Sydney Garcia’s single.
Two more from the Redhawks in the fourth cut the lead down to two, but Onstad blasted a home run to dead center in the bottom of the inning to push the lead back to three.
Seattle U would add a single run in the sixth, but could get no closer as Kailyn Packard picked up the save for the winning pitch Hoveland in the 7-5 victory.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Wednesday when they head to Cedar City, Utah, to take on former conference foe Southern Utah in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. CT on Mar. 27.
