KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (10-2) pushed its win streak to eight straight games after picking up a pair of wins on the opening day of the Back & Gold Tournament in Montgomery, Ala.  UMKC opened the day with a come-from-behind 10-7 victory over Presbyterian (2-6-2) at Barbara Williams Field, before knocking off Howard (2-8) 7-0 in the late game.

In the opener, the Roos fell behind 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, but exploded for five runs of their own in the inning to tie the game.  In the inning, the Roos sent 11 batters to the plate and collected four walks and two hits.

The lead, however, was short lived, as the Blue Hose plated two more in the top of the fifth to make it 7-5.

UMKC would come up empty in the bottom half of the fifth, but in the sixth, the Roos put up another five spot to take their first lead of the game.  Catherine Friloux connected on the big blow in the inning when her two-run double scored Maegan Rollow and Chyanne Onstad and put UMKC on top.

D.J. Cannon then finished PC off in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.

In the late game, freshman Kailyn Packard opened for UMKC on the mound, while Cannon came in to pick up her second win of the day.

The Roos jumped ahead early against the Bison, plating two in each of the first two innings.  Onstad’s two-run single in the first got the Roos started while Garcia followed with a two run double in the second.

UMKC went on to add three more runs against the Bison, while picking up their third shutout of the season.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. CT when they take on host Alabama A&M, before an evening tilt against Grambling State at 5:30 p.m. CT.
