KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (5-2) continued its hot start to the 2019 season with a pair of wins on Friday morning at Eagle Field in Statesboro, Ga., in the Eagle Round Robin.  The Roos opened the day with a 7-1 win over Mount St. Mary’s (0-1), before taking down IUPUI (0-6), 10-0 in the second game of the day.

In the opener against Mount St. Mary’s, Alexis D’Ambrosio and Maegan Rollow each collected three hits.  D’Ambrosio finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run, while Rollow was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs, a double and a steal.

Sydney Garcia, meanwhile, added two hits, two runs and two steals, while on the mound, D.J. Cannon moved to 2-0 on the season with a complete game, allowing just six hits and one run with six strikeouts.

The Mountaineers struck first with a run in the top of the first, but the Roos quickly answered with three in the bottom half of the inning.

Garcia crossed the plate first for UMKC on D’Ambrosio’s single before coming around to score on a double from Chyanne Onstad.  Rollow then doubled to center, scoring Lia Lombardini.

The Roos added two more in each of the next two innings, while Cannon would lock Mount St. Mary’s down over the final six innings of play as UMKC notched the 7-1 victory.

Against the Jags, the Roos continued to roll, using a six-run second inning to run rule the former conference rival.

In the second, Alexis Kump started the scoring when her single knocked in Rollow and Madason Shaw followed with a single of her own to plate Catherine Friloux.  Garcia and D’Ambrosio then singled in Kump and Shaw, respectively, while Onstad’s single to right center capped the scoring by knocking in D’Ambrosio and Garcia.

In the third, Rollow quickly made it 7-0 when she blasted a solo homerun to left center, and in the fourth, Ashlynn Williams’ triple scored D’Ambrosio and Garcia for their second runs of the game and Williams scored on Lombardini’s single to left to make it 10-0 and seal the game.

For the Roos, Kailyn Packard continued the squad’s strong effort on the mound, tossing five innings, allowing no runs, while striking out six.

At the plate, D’Ambrosio, Garcia and Rollow each recorded two hits, scored two runs and had an RBI with D’Ambrosio adding a stolen base and Rollow notching a double and a homerun.

The victory is the second of the season over the Jaguars after the Roos downed IUPUI 12-5 last weekend.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when they take on IUPUI at 8 a.m. CT and Morehead State at 10:30 a.m. CT on the second day of play at the Eagle Round Robin.
