KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s tennis team opens up the 2019 spring season at Peoria, Ill., to face off with Bradley on Saturday, Jan. 26 while the men’s team will travel to Lincoln, Neb., to take on the Nebraska on Wednesday, Jan. 30th.
The Roos will look to carry the momentum from the 2018 season, where the men’s team locked up a WAC regular season title and women’s teams secured its first ever WAC conference tournament title.
“We have some great returners this year who all have championship experience,” Head Coach Kendell Hale said. “That is key for our team with the men’s team coming off of a regular season championship and the women’s team looking for a three-peat this year.”
With the win over UTRGV in the WAC championship match, the UMKC women’s team moved on to the NCAA Tournament to face with off #9 Oklahoma State. The season would come to an end however with the Roos losing 1-4 to the Cowgirls.
Head coach Kendell Hale enters his 11th season at the helm for UMKC and looks to gather his seventh tournament title, which dates back to its Summit League affiliation in 2009.
Hale will look to junior player Tom Kruse (Flensburg, Germany) and sophomore player Diego Giraldo (Medellin, Colombia) to take charge on the men’s squad. Both Kruse and Giraldo combined for a 30-18 record while playing in the three and four spots throughout 2018.
On the women’s side, senior Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) will look to replicate her 2018 success where she posted a 19-7 record in the number two hole throughout conference play.
“We lost some key players from last year’s team, but have replaced them with some great freshman talent,” stated Hale.
