KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The UMKC women’s basketball team (6-6) will look to extend its four-winning streak when Illinois State arrives on Sunday, Decemeber 30th at 2 p.m. CT at Swinney Auditorium.
About the Roos - Knocking off SIUE and Louisiana Tech last week in the Roo Holiday Classic, UMKC extended their win streak to four games with big time performances from star player Ericka Matttingly, who obtained career highs for points in back to back games for the Roos. Mattingly scored 26 points versus SIUE on Thursday and 29 points against LA Tech on Friday, earning herself the Holiday Classic MVP award for the two games.
Mattingly Continues to Roll - Junior guard Ericka Mattingly (Wichita, Kan.) keeps impressing each week the Roos take the court, as she recorded two more 20 point games in the Roo Holiday Classic last week. Mattingly recorded a career-high 14 rebounds against SIUE and then scored a career-best 29 points against Louisiana Tech, which helped the Roos overcome a 38 point performance from the Techsters guard Kierra Anthony. Her performances in the tournament marked the ninth time in 12 games she has scored 20 points or more. Mattingly’s stat line for the 2018-2019 season consists of averages of 19.8 points, 6.7 assists, 6.3 rebounds and a 79.3 percentage on free throw attempts. The Junior College All-American still stands high amongst the other prolific scoring guards in the WAC, as she is first in points (19.8) and assists (6.7) and tied for first in steals per game (3.0). Mattingly was recently named WAC Player of the Week for her performances through Nov. 26-Dec. 2
Streaking Ahead in Non-Conference Play - For the first time since the 2011-12 season, UMKC has won six non-conference games before entering conference play
WAC Standings - As a team, UMKC sits second in points (74.5) while garnering a spot at fifth in rebounding (38.3) and second in three-point field goal percentage (32.9)
Preparing for the Redbirds - Illiniois State arrives to Swinney Auditorium with a 6-4 record which includes wins against Saint Louis and Oakland. The Redbirds will rely on forward Simone Goods to carry the torch in Sunday’s match up, as the senior has averaged 18.6 points and 8.6 rebounds on thus far. Last season, Goods was nominated as the MVC Newcomer of the Year for her performances in the 2017-2018 season
Vigil Making a Name For Herself - Freshman forward Leilah Vigil (Montbello, Colo.) remains a physical presence in the post for UMKC in 2018. The Montbello, Colo., native has recorded four double-doubles on the year with her most recent one coming against Loyola-Chicago back on Dec. 16th. In regards to rebounding, Vigil remains fifth in rebounds per game (9.0) in the WAC while sitting in second in field goal percentage (54.2). Vigil was recently named to the Holiday Classic All-Tournament team with her performances against SIUE and LA Tech
Spotlight Player - Freshman guard Emily Ivory (Davenport, Iowa) has been a force off the bench for UMKC all year with 27 three-point shots made thus far in 2018, which ranks first among all WAC players. Going in depth in her shot selection, Ivory has made a splash beyond the arc all year as she sits in fourth for three-point field goal percentage in the WAC (36.5). Ivory will look to continue to spread the floor for Jacie Hoyt’s squad when Illinois State arrives on Sunday afternoon
Last Season - In 2017-18, the Roos finished 11-19 overall and 7-7 in WAC play. On the season, UMKC picked up key WAC victories with an overtime win over Grand Canyon and sweeping the season series between UTRGV and Chicago State.
Checking off a Career Milestone - Having joined the 1000 point club this season, senior forward Kristen Moore (Chicago, Ill.) achieved another milestone as she recorded her 500th career rebound in the comeback victory over Louisiana Tech. Moore now sits 14th on the all time rebounding list after her four rebound performance against the Techsters. So far in 2018, Moore has averaged 8.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game for the Roos.
