KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 3 seed UMKC volleyball team (21-10) advanced to the semifinals of the WAC Tournament on Thursday night with a 3-0 win over No. 6 seed Seattle U (11-19) at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, Calif.

First Team All-WAC performer Tyrecia Lukes led the Roos in the match as the nation’s No. 3 ranked hitter finished with 16 kills, hitting .583 with four blocks.  Fellow first team honoree Alicia Harrington, meanwhile, added eight kills, four digs and a block and second team selection and all-freshman team selection Melanie Brecka chipped in six kills, hitting .353 with four digs and two blocks.

UMKC jumped ahead 1-0 in the match with a 25-20 first set win.  In the set, the Roos snapped a 10-10 tie with an 8-3 run to go ahead by five.  SU closed the gap to three late but a Harrington kill and a block from Emma Dyer sealed the victory.

Kansas City then pushed the lead to 2-0 with a 25-21 win in set two.  The Roos were again knotted midway through, this time at 11-11, but a 6-1 rally put UMKC ahead 17-12.  The Kangaroos went on to stretch the lead to a set-high seven at 22-15 on a kill from Harrington, while Lukes ended it with a kill.

UMKC then put the match away with a 25-18 third set win.  This time the Roos never trailed before an ace from Rhegan Spiegel and back-to-back Redhawk errors gave the match to the Roos.

In the back row, Spiegel led the Roos with 19 digs, to go along with two aces and three assists, while Alex Ratzlaff registered six kills and 10 digs.

At the net, Dyer had three blocks and four kills and Brooke Jacobs finished with three blocks and a kill.  Setting up the offense, Alli Schomers had 27 assists and four digs and Kynnedy Myers had 10 assists and four digs.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when they take on No. 2 seed New Mexico State in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament with a spot in Saturday’s championship match on the line.
