KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (20-9, 11-4) dropped a five-set heartbreaker to New Mexico State (21-7, 11-4) on Thursday night in Las Cruces, N.M.

The Roo attack was led by Tyrecia Lukes who hit .440 with 14 kills and nine blocks, while Alicia Harrington added 16 kills, hitting .242, eight digs, two blocks an ace and an assist.

Melanie Brecka was a third Roo in double figure kills with 10, three digs and two blocks and Alex Ratzlaff finished with 17 digs, nine kills, two aces and two assists.

The Roos built an early 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-18 win in the first set.  UMKC scored the first three points, two coming on a Harrington kill and Ratzlaff ace.  The Roos went on to stretch the lead to 9-1 with three straight Lukes kills capping the rally.  NMSU pulled to within one at 15-14, but could get no closer as Harrington put the capper on the set with a kill.

UMKC’s lead, however, was short-lived as the Aggies claimed the next two sets by identical 25-22 scores.

In set four, it was the Roos turn to bounce back with a 25-23 win.  In the set, the score was tied late at 19-19, but four straight from Kansas City, including two more kills from Harrington, pushed the lead to four.  NMSU again closed to within one, but a kill from Lukes and an NMSU error evened the match at two sets apiece.

In the deciding set, UMKC scored five of the first seven points, using two kills from Lukes, one from Jacobs and a pair of block assists from Jacobs and Lukes.  NMSU rallied back to tie the set at 6-6, while the Roos scored the next point to go back in front.  That, however, would be the final UMKC lead as the Aggies went on a 6-1 run before taking the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.

Defensively, Rhegan Spiegel notched 16 digs and an ace, while Brooke Jacobs added six kills and four blocks.

Alli Schomers topped the Roos with 29 assists, nine digs, two kills and an ace and Kynnedy Myers had 19 assists and four digs.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Saturday at 12 p.m. CT when they look for a share of the WAC Title against UTRGV.
