KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC Athletics announced today it has entered in to a partnership with Kansas City’s global architecture firm HOK for the design of enhanced branding of Swinney Recreation Center, a key step in solidifying Swinney as the HOME OF THE ROOS.

Last month, the Roos announced moving all men’s basketball home games to the on-campus venue beginning January 5, 2019.

“We welcome the opportunity to work with HOK as we continue with the forward progress of our athletic department. Creating visible changes to enhance our facility for men’s and women’s basketball, and volleyball is key.” Interim Athletics Director, Ursula Gurney said. “We want to work to create an environment in which our student-athletes are excited to play in and our donors and fans feel energized about.”

HOK’s Experience Design Group will address the essential elements required for the visual branding identity of Swinney as the Home of the Roos. Scope of the study will include interior and exterior considerations for Swinney, videoboard additions inside Swinney and exterior elements of the Durwood Athletics Team Building.

“The move to an on-campus venue is a significant and important transition for UMKC, the Roos men’s basketball program and their fans,” said Nate Appleman, director of Sports + Recreation + Entertainment at HOK. “We’re looking forward to working with UMKC to transform Swinney Recreation Center into a vibrant, energetic space that reflects the spirit of the team and their growth.”

The design work is scheduled to be completed by HOK within four weeks to allow time for installation of some elements for the first men’s basketball in Swinney on January 5, 2019.

Enhancing the branding and video elements is an important part of UMKC Athletics forward movement. In conjunction with the announcement of the move back to campus, earlier this month the department unveiled that they will also offer valet parking and an in-venue hospitality club for those attending Men’s Basketball games on campus. Previously, work began this summer to enhance the branding and graphics of several areas of the department including office spaces, the weight room and sports medicine.
