KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (13-7, 4-2) fell to UTRGV (14-6, 5-1), 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Swinney Recreation Center.
Alicia Harrington and Tyrecia Lukes paced the UMKC offense, finishing with 14 and 13 kills, respectively, while Melanie Brecka added nine. Defensively, Harrington added eight digs and three blocks, Lukes registered four blocks and two digs and Brecka had four digs and two blocks.
The Roos took an early 1-0 lead in the contest with a 25-23 first set win. Midway through the set, the score was tied at 11-11, but a 4-0 run, started by two Harrington kills and capped with a third from Brecka, put UMKC up four. UTRGV battled back to even the set at 22-22, but an ace from Brecka and kills from Harrington and Lukes sealed the win.
In the second set, UMKC broke a 10-10 tie with a Brecka kill and stretched the lead to as many as five, including late at 20-15 after a block from Emma Dyer and Harrington. The Vaqueros, though, stormed back to take the set 26-24 to even the match.
UTRGV followed by taking the third set 25-15, leaving them one set shy of victory. In the fourth set, the two teams battled back and forth, with the Roos leading late at 19-18. UTRGV answered with three straight before going on to take the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
In the match, Brooke Jacobs tallied six kills and a block and Dyer finished with four kills and two blocks. In the back row, Alex Ratzlaff had 16 digs and two aces and Rhegan Spiegel finished with 15 digs. Alli Schomers led the setters with 28 assists and Kynnedy Myers had 13.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they take on Chicago State in Chicago at 7 p.m. CT
